Fire Safety Design for Healthcare Facilities: protecting people and safeguarding hospital heritage
We continue our introduction of the leaders of our Business Units: today, we present Jessica Vulcano, Head of the Health Care Business Unit.
Her BU focuses on fire safety design for healthcare facilities, including:
- public and private hospitals with inpatient care;
- outpatient facilities for diagnostics and rehabilitation;
- public and private social-healthcare and assisted living facilities.
In these contexts, safety concerns not only the building itself, but most importantly the people inside: patients with various vulnerabilities, healthcare personnel, and visitors. Evacuation must be inclusive and requires detailed planning, effective communication, and close coordination to ensure everyone is protected and treated with the highest level of care and attention.
Studio Tecnico Rainieri has gained extensive experience in the healthcare sector, following a significant and tragic event in November 1979: the collapse of the Cattani Pavilion at the Parma Hospital. That moment profoundly shaped the history of fire safety in healthcare structures, becoming one of the studio’s top priorities from that day forward.

The Health Care Business Unit is led by Jessica Vulcano, who joined Studio Tecnico Rainieri in January 2005. With nearly twenty years of experience, she has carried on this mission, working alongside major national hospital administrations in both fire safety design and the daily management of fire protection systems.
Among the most significant projects handled by the BU are:
- For GKSD Holding, the redevelopment of the former Turkish Restaurant Hotel in Baghdad (Iraq) into a specialized hospital, complete with a shopping center and rooftop panoramic restaurant.
- For the Smart Clinic Group, the design of a new outpatient facility in Parma (Italy).
- For ASP Golgi Redaelli in Milan, both the fire safety design and compliance management for their three facilities in Milan, Vimodrone, and Abbiategrasso.
- For the Fondazione IRCCS Cà Granda – Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico di Milano, we are currently handling the final fire safety certification (SCIA Antincendio) for the new hospital building.
The strength of Jessica’s work lies in her ability to combine strategic vision, attention to detail, and genuine care for people, delivering fire safety solutions that are truly tailored to the specific needs of the healthcare sector.
